Every summer the calls start. Somebody bought a house with a hot tub that hasn't held water since the last owner. Or the pump died and the repair quote was more than the tub's worth. Or it's just been sitting on the deck for six years collecting pine needles and wasps.
Now it needs to be gone, and you've discovered the problem: a hot tub is basically an 800-pound fiberglass boulder with plumbing.
I'm Ryan — I own HMW Services here in Billings. We pull hot tubs out of backyards from the Heights to Laurel to Lockwood all the time, so here's the straight version of what removal actually involves, what it runs, and whether you should try it yourself.
Why hot tubs are their own kind of miserable
A couch is heavy. A hot tub is heavy AND awkward AND usually trapped. Most of the ones we remove were installed before the fence went up, before the deck got built around them, or before the landscaping grew in. The tub got in easy. It is not coming out easy.
Empty, most tubs run 500–900 pounds. They don't fit through gates. They don't corner well. And they're often still wired to a 220V line that somebody needs to deal with before anything moves.
So the honest answer for most removals: the tub gets cut into pieces on site. Sawzall, some dust control, sections small enough to carry out through a normal gate. Sounds brutal, works great, and it's how a two-man crew gets a tub out of a fenced backyard in a couple hours without destroying your grass or your gate posts.
What it costs
Every yard is different, so I won't pretend there's one number — but I'll tell you what moves the price:
Access. Tub sitting next to the driveway? Cheap end. Tub behind two fences, down a slope, built into a deck? More labor, more cost.
Cut-up vs. whole. If we can roll it out whole to the trailer, faster and cheaper. Most need cutting.
What's still connected. Drained and disconnected saves time. Still full of green water and wired hot? We handle it, but it adds to the job.
Our minimum for any job is $200, and hot tubs typically land above that depending on the factors up there. Can you DIY it?
You can. People do. Here's the honest checklist if you're thinking about it:
Kill the power at the breaker and disconnect the 220V line (if you're not comfortable with this part, stop here — that's not a learning-opportunity voltage).
Drain it completely. That's 300–450 gallons, and it can't go in the storm drain.
Cut it into sections you can actually lift — through fiberglass, acrylic, foam insulation, and the wood frame.
Haul it. The pieces of one tub will bury a pickup bed, usually two trips to the landfill plus dump fees.
Figure a full day, a Sawzall with a stack of blades, a friend who owes you, and a truck. Some folks enjoy that kind of Saturday. If you don't, that's what we're for.
What happens to it after
Metal components — pumps, heaters, frames — get pulled for recycling. The shell and foam go to the landfill; nobody's found a better answer for old fiberglass yet, and anyone who tells you different is greenwashing you. We're straight about that.
Common questions
How long does removal take? Most residential removals: 1–3 hours on site, depending on access and whether it needs cutting.
Do I need to drain it first? Helps, not required. We can drain on site — tell us when you call so we bring what we need.
Do you take the pad or deck too? Yep. Concrete pad demo, deck section removal, whatever the tub was sitting on — we do light demolition, so it can all go in one trip. Ask when you call.
Do you serve outside Billings? Billings, the Heights, Lockwood, Laurel, Shepherd, Huntley, and out to Red Lodge and Roundup. If you're within about 90 miles, call — worst case I tell you it's outside our range.
